Wall-to-wall carpet is out and hard floors are in, but every living area and bedroom with hard floors, as well as most formal dining areas, should have an area rug to soften the look and improve acoustics.
When staging a home to sell, all “throw” rugs smaller than 5' x 7' (or 152 x 213 cm) should be removed from the home before photographs and showings. Having too many throw rugs around the house eats up perceived square footage. Don't use too many area rugs larger than 5' x 7', either. Use them to “anchor” furniture arrangements in rooms with hard floors, or in rooms with wall-to-wall carpeting that are large enough for more than one “zone” (for example, a primary bedroom with an area for the bed and another area for a seating arrangement).
PROPER SCALE & PLACEMENT OF AREA RUGS
Many people, even home stagers, make the mistake of using area rugs that are too small. The rug should be large enough that the front feet of every piece of furniture is on top of the rug.

OUR FAVORITE AREA RUGS FOR STAGING
We use 8' x 10' rugs the most often for living rooms, bedrooms, and formal dining rooms.
We use 5' x 7' in tiny bedrooms with a twin bed, or offices that aren't big enough for any larger. Sometimes a 5' x 7' will look good in a really large foyer or entry.
Round rugs are best for round dining sets, obviously. For a table that will seat four people, the rug should be 8' in diameter. For round tables that will seat 6-8 people, the rug should be 10' in diameter.

The Parkerfield area rug is very versatile for us because stage most often in a color palette of white, cream, beige, tan, gray, and black.

Like the rug above, the Georgiana area rug works well with the color palette we use the most often. The gays and blacks in this rug are more prominent, but it's a lighter in person than in the online images.

Jute rugs in shades of tan are properly the most versatile style of all rugs, not to mention timeless. We do advise against using black or any other color of jute rug, however, as the dyes used can bleed and stain the flooring underneath.

This rug is the one we added most recently to our inventory. We needed a larger, modern rug (this one is 11' x 15') for a recent spec home we staged for Pulte Group.

Since the color trends become increasingly warmer, we're adding this rug to our inventory.
